What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine treats you, the individual, and not just your disease condition. Licensed Naturopathic Physicians utilize the least intervention possible to safely and effectively treat a wide variety of illnesses. They are trained with a bio-medical science foundation and spend additional time learning integrative therapies such as botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, physical manipulation, environmental medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. Your naturopathic physician will spend a great deal of time with you in order to understand the underlying cause of your disease and partner with you to create an individualized treatment plan that incorporates your preferences and your goals. Naturopathic physicians often consult with, collaborate with, and refer to other physicians and specialists when appropriate. They order labs and imaging, perform physical exams, and diagnose and treat many acute and chronic diseases. Naturopathic medicine is great for children because it is safe, gentle, and not only effectively treats symptoms and diseases, but also prevents the development of many future chronic diseases.
Naturopathic physicians are trained at accredited medical schools overseen by The Counsel on Naturopathic Medical Education, of which there are currently five in the United States:
- The Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine
- The National University of Natural Medicine
- Bastyr University
- The University of Bridgeport
- The National University of Health Sciences
Naturopathic physicians are required to pass board exams to become licensed in their state and to practice medicine. They are held to a national standard of practice and required to do continuing education.
